In the hot, humid Tokyo weather, most people would want to wear cool, light clothes, but the fashion kids in Harajuku are enjoying more layered styles.
From this past winter, there has been a trend of wearing bathrobes instead of coats. Fashionable brands have been putting out bathrobe-like long coats, and used/vintage clothing stores were full of them.
This summer, we're seeing another stage of evolution in the bathrobe boom! Keeping inline with the ever-increasing heat, the kimono is gaining popularity.
Everyone is wearing vintage kimonos. Apparently they like the good air flow, with the kimono's open underarms. With bathrobes, we saw a relatively larger number of men wearing them, but both men and women alike are getting into kimonos. Cool!
To the fashion kids of Harajuku, who are constantly on the lookout for the "Next Thing", traditional Japanese prints and patterns are fresh and new. Even accessories with traditional Japanese-style motifs are gaining attention: "koshihimo" (the cord tied around the waist before wearing a kimono belt) are being used as hair accessories, and traditional Japanese beads are being worn as necklaces.
